Only 20 Miles

It's no secret! Most Hunters grounds are as private and guarded as a pirates treasure location, but if you care to share some general references we welcome them!

Only 20 Miles

23 Apr 07

One of my Sunday school chums brought one of the elders I most respect to me after church yesterday, and as they approached she said, "(Little Eddie) can take care of your hog problem for you."

The gentleman and his lovely wife are up in years and could use some help. Hogs are churning up their front yard and their back -- grass, flowers, and garden. But he quickly told me that they only allow "a select few 'trustworthy' people to hunt their land." I told him that with me he only had to worry about the welfare of the hogs -- that I had no interest in his deer.

Drove by on the road and looked in on our way home. Most of what Ila and I could see is rather close cover, and there is a 20 acre or larger thicket on the neighbor's hill next door. I will check the place out next Thursday or Friday and decide what initial hunting tactics I will use.

I have known the family for nine years, and this is the first hint that they will let me hunt on their property. It is as if first one has to build up trust over time, and then be able to prove your hog-killing ability to the community before you receive invitations to hunt hogs in this area.

The best news: This hog heaven (haven?) is only 20 miles from our driveway.

30 Kills

30 Kills

The young boar I mentioned in "The Muddiest Boar" post is the 30th hog I killed at this site. At first, all the thickets and wooded bottoms on this property were rather daunting. But after a time, I figured how to root some hogs out of which I was able to kill some.

45 Definite Kills

Since the property owner wishes for me to thin out and chase off the hogs, I usually shoot whatever pig presents itself on the Bennie Place. This does not lead toward the successful hunting of trophy boar since I am running some of the big fellows off when I am shooting the others. I am certain also that I sometimes do not notice the trophy boar when my eyes are focused upon the next pig which steps out.

I now have put my hands upon 45 dead swine at this location. I am certain that a few others escaped me to die in the thickets of this overgrown property.

Out of 45, I consider two of them to be trophies.

Little Eddie, I wish we had half the boars you guys have down there! Do you want to give a few of them directions and send them on their way northeast?

Outlaw:

These hogs in Texas don't look forward to cold weather: I was out in the moonlight early Tuesday morning at a new hot hog hunting property. There was frost on the ground. Not a hog ventured out in the frosty grass; even though I had corn trails spread.

I could hear them back in the woods; but none were brave enough to venture into the frosty grass. I do not think I could convince them to move to PA. They would certainly have to grow some hair to survive there. :D

That they would! I was out rabbit hunting on Saturday, the temp was 2 degrees. Needless to say, we didnt see a rabbit. Now I wonder which is the more intelligent species...?

Little Eddie,

I might not need you to chase some hogs northeast after all. My brother talked me into going back out to look for hog sign again last tuesday (it didnt take much talking though). We made the 3 hr trip up there in the very early morning darkness hoping for the best of luck. When we got to the state land that I've been scouting, it didnt look good. The tire tracks stopped at the State Game Lands border and we ran into 10 inches of snow and ice! So I slapped the truck in 4 wheel drive and powered through to the parking spot by where the thick creek bottom is and planned our route of march. We walked down one side of the hollow and found some tracks that look like they might have been made by hogs. 2 inches of snow had dusted everything the night before, so it was tough to see what the tracks looked like but there were definate drag marks from bodies in the snow. Unfortunately we walked around the hollow and didnt see anything fresher than that, and lost those tracks when they got into briars that were thick enough to stop a Brush Hog. So we went back to the truck and decided to go to the general store for lunch and figure out Plan B. When we got to the store, the lady behind the counter was suprised that anyone was even out hunting, I guess in that area farming is more important than hunting. She went on to tell us where the hogs escaped from and how we could find that "farm". (The kind of place where you pay your money, walk into about a 30 acre pasture thats fenced in and shoot what you want.) So we decided to see what kind of pigs they had and how heavily the properties around them were posted, maybe we could get permission to wander around. In the process of driving out the road and looking in the fields for hogs, I managed to put the old Dodge into a culvert ditch (should've watched the road a little more and the fields a little less). So after checking the truck out and seeing nothing was busted up, my brother walked down the road to the next farm to see about getting a tractor to pull us out. (It was in there good, the rear drivers side of the bumper was about 5 ft in the air!) After the truck got back on solid ground, we were talking to the farmer and told her that we were looking for hogs, she told us that her back pasture is tore up all the time by hogs and we were only about 2-3 miles down the ridge from where they got free from. So we secured permission to hunt there and then went to see if we could get a look at what kind of hogs they had at this farm. They look like true Russian Boars in the pens that they have up there. We decided to call it a day considering the 3 hr drive back home, but are planning on going back up this wednesday to scout the farm out and look for sign and maybe actual hogs. Hopefully soon we will be able to start posting pictures of hogs that we got on here instead of just questions on how to find them.

P.S. I hope your feeling better soon

PAoutlaw,

I am excited for you! The anticipation is sweet.

I hope you go out there and shoot a big boar hog with tushes that won't quit!

P.S. Don't feel too bad about running your pickup off the road. I have run off the road watching fields myself a couple of times. On the other hand, maybe I shouldn't admit to such things because it may lead younger hunters astray. :?

Little Eddie,

Since the truck came through with no visible damage, other than a mudflap missing, I feel great about the whole day and laugh about the culvert pipe. When the two of us go out hunting, scouting, or whatever, we almost need to sign waivers of responsibility. You could almost bet and win money on the fact that whenever and wherever we go, something unexpected and really off the wall is going to happen. As long as we dont get hurt, it makes for good stories and memories!
