There's controversy about hog trapping here in Honolulu. For some years now, feral pigs have been showing up in people's yards (due to man's continuing expansion into formerly wild areas.) People with several million dollar homes are being "terrorized" by these savage creatures. So, the state traps them. It sends out a handful of its own employees, and it pays "subcontractors." The subcontractors, of course, are local hunters, and for some reason tend to be on the "wouldn't want to run into them in a dark alley" variety.
Anyway, a sow got caught in a snare on one of the nicer golf courses. This is a good thing, right? Keeping the world safe for golfers? Only the hunter who set the trap only checked it rarely, perhaps less than once per month. All these people paying hundreds of dollars for their golfing vacation get to spend some quality time in close proximity to a squealing mommy pig. One woman went back for several days in a row to videotape the hog's distress, and brought the matter before the state legislature.
Now our mighty lawmakers are wrestling with this widespread epidemic of porcine torture. Newspapers are running articles. TV is sending reporters. People are aghast that the state could condone such reprehensible behavior.
And I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Sure, I think it is irresponsible to set traps that you don't maintain regularly. Fine that guy, and move on. On the other hand, if you want the pigs out of your back yard (they do), and you are unwilling to let hunters use guns or dogs in your neighborhood (they can't), and you call the police every time you cross an unsavory-looking character on the walking trails in your public park (I don't know a single hunter without a story about having the cops sicced on them), then what option is left?
Oh, and maybe I'll tell you the one about the state paying hog hunters from Australia to come "fix our problem" rather than approaching the local hunting community. Talk about a brouhaha!!
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.
